Guggenheim and Boat Taxi

Peggy and  Boat Taxi-

Buongiorno from a warm cloudy Saturday in Venice.  I’m sitting in my hotel listening to the boats splash by along the canal.   Just an hour ago we came up this way right past my window in Taxi 142-no wheels!

This morning after breakfast we walked back towards Piazza San Marco to visit the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.  It was a beautiful 18th century building right along the Grand Canal in the Dorsoduro sestiere of Venice. ( There are six neighborhoods here referred to as the sestiere. ).  Peggy lived here from 1949 and opened her collection in 1950 to the public.  We saw lots of art including Picasso, Warhol and Jackson Pollack...as well as an exhibit on the prolific Jean Cocteau.   It wasn’t overwhelming or too big which was perfect for visiting before more Cafes in the Plaza. 😄

I realize this section of our trip is mostly a food blog! But have to fuel up for our pedaling this week right?! Today’s cafe lunch....Gelati!  Another very old cafe ...this one from 1775-Cafe Quadri, right across the Piazza from Cafe Florian.  More musicians filled the plaza with Italian classic tunes and a very talented accordionist.  (I think Mom could have filled in if they played the one song she knows so well!)

The pigeons and seagulls also own this plaza.  As soon as people look away the birds swoop in!  They were knocking over wine glasses right and left.  Classical music playing...people wining and dining... then crash! Pigeon strikes again.  ‘What a hoot!”, as Dad says.  ...Or a pigeon ‘coo’in this case!

I had the pistachio gelati and Dad the cafe/chocolate! Yum!

Thankfully the birds avoided our table! Crash!

After our delightful dessert lunch in San Marco we decided to take a boat taxi back towards the train station,  just to experience Venice from the water... and give our legs a break.  It was a really neat way to see the city! Such busy waterways with gondolas and taxis passing each other closely and casually.  From the Grand Canal our Boat taxi took a left right past our hotel and dropped us off at the shops ...where I bought something a bit warmer to wear.    We got back to the hotel just in time before it started to sprinkle!

View from the back of the boat!

Our taxi dropped us at the sidewalk

We rode in the back outside to see the views

Writing postcards in the garden in the rain and enjoying our last days here.

It’s that time again! Cicchetti hour!

( Tonight we are going back to the same restaurant to get those wild strawberries again!)

I made the reservation under Barry Bondsy again oops.

Much love home! Tomorrow we begin to pedal!

  1. Venice is beautiful. And the food is very good. Didn't ride many boats as walking Venice gave me a chance to ruminate, as well as revealed all sorts of little nooks and crannies. But looking at the photos of you guys on the canals - I think I missed out. The canals are beautiful.

  3. Grace here. Another fun day for you and Mark. All of my favorite artists. Loved that mini tour. And the outdoor seating areas are lovely! I love today’s Rez was Barry Bondsy. That’s clever. The food makes my thighs grow larger just looking at the pics! Venice will one day be completely under water so glad you got to experience the canals and see so much from the water. Albeit the rain, seems like a near perfect day for the two weary travelers. 😘
